Currently, 90% of climate credits have been deemed worthless for measuring actual impact since the climate credit system does not fully correlate to the carbon emissions reductions that are being used to measure climate impact. The management systems also vary globally and involve various agencies and governments, resulting in lack of data transparency and bias concerns for the auditing process.
VeriGreen sees the opportunity for a universal institutional tool to solve a key issue of bringing verification data into one place while also solving the access, trust, and transparency issues.
A key environmental metric used by forest management agencies is the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), which assesses the health and density of vegetation using aerial/satellite imagery.
This allows us to utilize existing satellite imaging data with blockchain technology (decentralized storage, ZK proofs, and random number generators) to verify, track, and incentivize land owners for keeping up with environmental preservation practices. Plus, landowners will earn tokens when they pass verification checks—let’s use blockchain to create the climate change we wish to see in the world!
VeriGreen leverages existing and available satellite and blockchain technology to create a secure, trustless and transparent institutional tool for environmental management agencies and landowners.
The key steps of the webapp UX/UI flow and technologies include:
1️⃣ VeriGreen: Data Ingestion & Storage on Filecoin (Protocol Labs) - the satellite images are downloaded and converted from large raster files to smaller tiles (GeoTIFF or PNG). The tiles also include the embedded metadata (coordinates, date, source, NDVI threshold, etc).
2️⃣ Landowner: Land Identification & Tile Selection (ZK proof from vLayer) - the tiles are available for landowners to claim in their VeriGreen’s account portal (webapp) after they login with their wallet. This creates a secure connection for each landowner (could be an entity or individual since it is a wallet address). This supports the variety of landowners across the globe: individual owners (10-100 acres), Co-Ops/NGOs (100-10K acres), and corporations (10K-500K acres).
3️⃣ Agency/Government: Verification Request (via random generator from Pyth Network) & Response (ZK proof from vLayer) - the random number generator selects a tile for verification at the cadence requested by the institutional user, creating an unbiased “random sample” that can be verified for following climate protocols through specified environmental metrics (such as NDVI). Each tile will show only the relevant environmental metrics for the requestor via ZK proof technology.
4️⃣ VeriGreen: Tokenized Rewards to Landowner for Successful Verification (Optimism, due to vLayer compatibility). If the environmental metric verification passes, the landowner will be rewarded with tokens and/or agency stamps of approval (NFTs) on the blockchain. This creates a log and history for each landowner as well, which can be referenced overtime for environmental conservation adherence and upkeep.
