Project Description

Increasingly, we see the failures of centralized media. Misinformation, fake news, and censorship have resulted in the rise of citizen journalism. People use online “town halls” like Twitter, and live broadcasting services from Instagram live and YouTube to Twitch, to connect with audiences, but everyday accounts get banned. Thus, many communities globally have transitioned to “more” secure communication platforms such as Telegram and Signal. Still, there currently isn’t a way to reward citizen journalists, educators, and content creators and connect them with their communities in a decentralized, censorship resistant way. Streamseed empowers communities and creators by offering a token-gated platform that generates revenue for the creator and allows them to manage who has access to their content. Just share the stream link to your token-gated community on Telegram, and the same token-holders will gain access to the stream and a live chat. No bots, just your community. Safely stream. Control your outlet by broadcasting, earning, and managing your audience.

How it's Made

Streamseed is made from 3 main components. We use Livepeer for for video streaming and multi-stream, so creators can retain their web2 audience and still benefit from the crypto-native security features of the platform itself. We use Unlock Protocol and MATIC (Polygon) for access control for the video stream and chat box, which is essential for tokenized communities. Finally, we leveraged XMTP messaging system to engage the audiences with the streaming via a live chat feature. The technologies used include React, chakra for UI component, Rainbow kit for wallet signing, Ether.js, wagmi, XMTP, Polygon, Livepeer, and Unlock Protocol. Notable hackworthiness!... managing dependencies from many different and new conflicting technologies; also XMTP is 1-to- chat, and through a novel private key for our app, we hacked a 1-to-many chat box. We used 3 web3 protocols that are completely new to us, and shipped a fully functional token-gated video+messaging platform MVP, expanding the envelope of Web3 media platforms.
