SaferBridge is a trust-minimal, permissionless Layer2-to-Layer2 bridge which routes funds across a common layer 1 with the intention of being a public good.

We think that third-party bridges cannot be trusted. We already have direct connections to other chains through the layer 1, so why not use them? That's what we set out to do. We want this to be a public good available across all chains.
Every single part of SaferBridge is trustless and permissionless. We batch deposits into a contract on the sending L1, perserving gas fees in the process, and send the bridging payload first up to layer 1 and then back down to the destination layer 2. This process saves each user 80% in gas fees and the only protocol fees paid go to incentivize actors to initiate the various steps required from end to end.
We mainly tested and built the contracts in Remix using Solidity, jumping back and forth between the various blockchain explorers to figure out how cross-chain communication can be done while preserving the payload bundle. We chose to build on Scroll, as it provided both a suitably functioning and well-documented native cross-chain communication. It was, however, still difficult to send funds from the contract and not from the message sender.
Our project represents a significant endeavor, underpinned by the strategic decision to utilize React (with Material-UI) and integrate Redux, laying a robust foundation for future evolution and a potential production release. We undertook innovative experimentation in our smart contract logic, reflecting a forward-thinking approach to our project’s architectural design. The project's framework is solidly constructed, providing a stable base that is ripe for extensive development. The well-structured routing, switch mechanisms, components, and smart contracts are meticulously prepared to accommodate advanced development across various selected protocols. We view this project not merely as an innovative bridge solution in the technological landscape but also as a contribution to the public good, highlighting our commitment to blending cutting-edge technology with social responsibility.
