S-Block.org

Federated Web3 creative commons: co-create, remix, fund & govern under CC licenses

ETHGlobal New York 2025

Project Description

S-Block Community Commons — Federated Web3 Open Culture Collaboration

S-Block delivers a federated, open-source Web3 toolkit that empowers artists and creators to co-produce, adapt, and share cultural content under Creative Commons licenses—while ensuring autonomy, interoperability, and resilience across the network.

Federated Collaboration Layer – Built on a network-of-networks model, independent S-Block hubs interconnect via ActivityPub protocols. Each hub keeps control of its data, governance, and community, yet seamlessly exchanges content, proposals, and reputation signals with others.

Transparent Funding & Provenance – Contributors can crowdfund projects, with all edits, remixes, transactions, and treasury operations logged on-chain. Each creative fork is minted with embedded CC licensing and full provenance tracking.

Hybrid Participatory Governance – Combines on-chain DAO voting with federated proposal tools, enabling both local autonomy and cross-hub consensus for cultural decision-making.

Open-Source DApp – Smart contracts, modular UI components, and metadata schemas are published under permissive licenses, fostering reuse, remix, and adaptation across the commons.

At ETHGlobal, we will prototype a hacky integration of blockchain, federation, and Creative Commons licensing—pushing Web3 beyond single-platform decentralization toward a truly interoperable, cultural commons ecosystem.

How it's Made

Technical Deep Dive: S-Block Community Commons Core Architecture & Tech Stack

Federated Web3 Nodes: We implement a federation layer using ActivityPub, enabling independent S‑Block instances to communicate, share content, and synchronize governance—much like Mastodon or PeerTube. This allows decentralized cultural hubs to operate autonomously yet interoperate as a unified commons.

Blockchain & Smart Contracts: Utilize Solidity-based contracts on Ethereum or an Optimism L2 to log funding flows, content edits, remix provenance, and treasury operations.

Distributed Storage: Media and metadata reside on IPFS, giving content immutability, deduplication, and decentralized availability.

Governance & Commons Toolkit Hybrid DAO Mechanics: Combine on-chain voting with federated proposal systems; participants can propose or value content via local node UI, and core decisions are ratified on-chain.

Creative Commons Metadata: Embed CC licensing metadata alongside content in IPFS and smart contracts, ensuring license attribution remains intact through remixes.

Partner Technologies & Integration

Fediverse Tools: We leverage existing open-source ActivityPub libraries (e.g., from Pleroma or WordPress plugins) for federated interoperability.

Identity via Web3 Domains: Optionally utilize Unstoppable Domains for user identity, tying wallets to human-readable handles.

Innovative ‘Hack’ Highlights

Federated remix lineage: When a creator remixes content on their node, it publishes the derived version via ActivityPub. The remix’s metadata, provenance, and CC license are minted on-chain as a “forked” NFT.

Subsidiary decentralization: By blending federation with on-chain trust, S-Block uses a ‘network-of-networks’ model that preserves local autonomy while enabling global interoperability—realizing a more social and resilient form of decentralization.

Edge-first UX: Creators can work offline or peer-to-peer via an optional Holochain layer for editing, syncing updates to the federated network later—accelerating workflows while preserving decentralization integrity.
