Project Description

ReDevice is a public and verifiable device passport platform for second-hand electronics, inspired by the European Union’s Digital Product Passport framework and its goals of transparency, circularity, repairability, and informed purchasing.

Each registered device receives a QR-accessible passport containing its identity, current condition, verified coverage date, and repair history. Buyers can inspect this information without creating an account or connecting a wallet. Authorized issuers register devices, while capability-approved repairers append signed service records.

ReDevice helps buyers evaluate used electronics through transparent and tamper-evident records while clearly distinguishing verified on-chain history from earlier, unknown service claims. The project demonstrates how decentralized infrastructure can complement emerging Digital Product Passport systems, including future interoperability with registries and standardized product data.

How it's Made

ReDevice uses Sui Move smart contracts to create shared DevicePassport objects and store verifiable repair attestations on Sui Testnet. AdminCap and RepairerCap objects provide capability-based authorization, ensuring that connecting a wallet alone does not grant permission to register devices or add repair records.

Serial numbers are hashed locally, and the on-chain registry prevents duplicate device registrations. The browser-based frontend connects to Sui wallets, reads passport data from the network, supports QR scanning or pasted QR content, and generates downloadable QR passport PDFs. After a repair transaction is signed, the interface reloads the updated history from Sui, while transaction details can be independently inspected through SuiVision.

The architecture reflects key ideas of the EU Digital Product Passport framework: a unique product identity, a digital data carrier such as a QR code, role-based access, traceable product information, and support for repair and circular use. The European Commission’s DPP Registry became operational on July 20, 2026 and supports registration through a user interface or API. ReDevice is currently an independent hackathon prototype and is not yet connected to the official EU Registry, but its modular design provides a path toward future API integration and standardized, interoperable product data.

Evidence references are supported without claiming that blockchain itself verifies that a physical repair occurred. Instead, the blockchain verifies which authorized wallet signed the record, when it was created, and that it was not silently modified.
