Project Description
The Issue: There are several privacy-related problems with traditional chat programs.
Data Gathering and Monetization: These applications gather a ton of user data, such as contacts, messages, and location data. Then, sometimes without the user's knowledge or consent, this data is sold to unaffiliated businesses for the purpose of targeted advertising. Centralized Servers: Information kept on centralized servers is susceptible to hacking, data breaches, and government monitoring. Users' private information is at danger because of this. Lack of Control: Users' ability to manage their data is little or nonexistent. Once the program has collected personal information, they are unable to view, remove, or alter it. Ad-supported chat applications flood users with customized advertisements based on their data, making the experience crowded and annoying. This is an example of invasive advertising.
