Project Description

Intro: Let's be real – who doesn't love some good merch? Some of us even packed an extra suitcase just for the swag we grabbed at EthCC and ETHGlobal. But then what? We use these quirky T-shirts to mop the floor, sleep in them, or worse – toss them out.

Problem: Here's the kicker: the fashion industry is the third largest polluter on the planet. And guess what? We're part of the problem. Globally, the fashion industry spews out 4–5 billion tons of CO2 each year – that’s more than international flights and maritime shipping combined. We’re talking 97 million tons of waste each year. 85% of all textiles produced in a year end up in trash. And 500,000 tons of microfibers end up in our oceans annually – that’s like dumping 50 billion plastic bottles into the sea.

Solution: Enter Merch’n’dice – your go-to secondary market for merch where you can buy, sell, or bid on those cool items.

How does it work?

Got merch? Choose if you want it available immediately for a fixed price, thrown into a raffle, or auctioned off if it’s something ultra-rare. And all proceeds go towards funding public goods and open-source projects.

Tech stack: React and Solidity. We use WalletConnect AppKit on the frontend together with ENS and Blockscout API to enhance UX. On smart contract side we use Chainlink VRF to randomly choose raffle winners on-chain. Smart contracts are deployed on most important L2s, Base, Arbitrum and Scroll.

The roadmap:

  1. Partnerships with major events, so you can buy, sell, or bid on vintage merch live at conferences.

  2. Reputation program for the biggest donors.

  3. Merch’n’dice Approved – a program for companies: Another reason why the fashion industry is such a huge polluter is the cheap materials and distant manufacturing. By using natural materials or sourcing from local businesses, your company can earn the “Approved by Merch’n’dice” stamp. We will use third-party knowledge graph and supply chain solution i order to guarantee this.

  4. Onboard non-web3 people by adding a vintage shop for peer-to-peer purchases (not just for merchandise, but fashion brands in general)

How it's Made

Merch'n'dice is a dapp written is React and Solidity. We use WalletConnect AppKit with its advanced features like Email and Social login and SIWE in order to enable seamless onboarding. Blockscout is used as an official block explorer, so we redirect all users to it and display tnx info on user profiles with their API. ENS is there of course to make addresses more user friendly and get additional info like user avatars. Every merch item is minted as NFT when uploaded. Smart contracts are deployed on testnets like Base Sepolia, Arbitrum One Sepolia and Scroll Sepolia. Metadata is ofc uploaded on IPFS with a little help of web3.storage. People can participate in raffles to win the merch. Winners are randomly chosen on-chain with Chainlink VRF. All earnings from the platform are later distributed to Public Goods in funding rounds. ApeCoin and $nouns holders can vote and decide on which projects. will participate in those rounds.
