Balancer Protocol allows for automated portfolio management and providing liquidity turning the concept of an index fund on its head: instead of paying fees to portfolio managers, you collect fees from traders who rebalance your portfolio by following arbitrage opportunities. Developers leverage Balancer as a permissionless building block to innovate freely and create new treasury management systems. Balancer started as a research project in early 2018 inside of BlockScience by Fernando Martinelli when he became obsessed with the problem of multidimensional invariant surfaces. Eventually, with the help of the founding team including Mike McDonald, he came up with a powerful mathematical framework to enable any portfolio to continuously self-rebalance while generating fees.
